«I get help from those who were shot»

In Russian
In English
In German

We will hold them all to account: from Stalin to the specific executioner in Tomsk, including the driver of the «black voronok» (Voronok – a black car used by the officers of NKVD to arrest “traitors of the country”). One man kills another, and then says: you know, I killed him, but here’s the certificate that I rehabilitated him — now everything is Okay. No, it’s not okay. And it is absolutely obvious. We believe that the discussion that never happened in the 1950s or in the 1980s has now begun!

Степан Иванович Карагодин

Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin

56-year-old peasant Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin was arrested on the night of December 1, 1937 by the members of the Tomsk State Military Committee of the NKVD, convicted by the Special Conference as the organizer of a spy-sabotage group and a resident of Japanese military intelligence and was sentenced to death by shooting. The verdict was carried out on January 21, 1938. His wife and children did not know about the execution and hoped that he was alive. In the late 50’s they received a certificate of rehabilitation, which stated that Stepan Ivanovich «died in prison.»

Денис Карагодин

Denis Karagodin

The great-grandson of Stepan Ivanovich, who graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Tomsk University, 34-year-old Denis Karagodin decided to identify the names of those who were guilty of falsifying accusations against those arrested in the «Harbinskiy case» and trace the criminal chain — from the Kremlin initiators of the «Great Terror» to ordinary performers in Tomsk , right up to the drivers of the «black voronok» and typists who reprinted the papers of the NKVD. The archives of the Soviet secret services are extremely reluctant to share information, but Denis managed to get a lot of documents showing how the machine of Stalin’s repressions worked, killing innocent people.

In the article dedicated to the investigation of Denis Karagodin, Russian historian, Doctor of Historical Sciences Ivan Kurilla writes:

«Karagodin raised the question of the responsibility of the state and the specific executors of the terror, not the political one, which was discussed since the 20th Congress of the CPSU, but the question of the criminal responsibility. In Russia, such a step looks both natural and impossible. The Russians did not have their own committee on national reconciliation, nor their tribunal for executioners. Denis Karagodin offered his form of clarifying relations with the past: a personal investigation and a personal lawsuit over the death of his great-grandfather.»

In June 2016, Denis Karagodin told Radio Liberty about his hope to complete the investigation with a real trial. Now all the materials necessary for the preparation of this process are collected. In November, Denis received the last key document: an act of execution of 36 people including Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin together with his 6 “accomplices” by the NKVD of Tomsk. All of those people were posthumously rehabilitated.

«Now we have the entire chain of murderers: from the Politburo (Political Bureau) to the specific executioner»

– Denis Karagodin writes.

In total on the day of January 21, 1938 – in Tomsk prison, 64 people were shot by officers of the NKVD of the city department. People who were not mentioned in the act, were executed for a different “crime.”

The most important thing is that the document contains the names of the direct executioners. This is an assistant of the head of the Tomsk prison Zyryanov, the commandant of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD Denisov and inspector Noskova.

Denis Karagodin tried to get this document for months. His numerous requests always finished the same way – formal replies that this document doesn’t exist, and any information that could shed light on where it might be was blocked.

Caught in this desperate situation, but not willing to give up, Denis developed a complex action plan that involved the State Duma, the Federation Council and even the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.

After his repeated requests, the letter from the archive of the Directorate of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Novosibirsk Region unexpectedly came with copies of documents about the execution and names of the executioners.

DENIS KARAGODIN TOLD THE RADIO OF FREEDOM HOW THIS HAPPENED

In addition to my «standard» work of searching for information about the NKVD staff among various departmental and political archives that I started in 2012 I decided at some point to apply the method of direct data collection from descendants of people whose relatives were also shot in Tomsk.

П-1997, л. (конверт).

With this step, I solved two tasks: 1) to complete the list of the employees of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD during the period when it was “Operating sector” which is the period from December 1937 to January 1938 (according to my calculations there had to be about 70 people) and having this data they became suspects on «my case»; 2) to collect a graphological database of the maximum number of extracts from the acts of executions (thus forming a database of graphological profiles of the NKVD staff, on the basis of which I could reveal structural patterns and thus answer the question: who left autographs on the extract of my great-grandfather’s execution).

I tried to “take” any information concerning the city of Tomsk and Tomsk district during the period 1935-1939 in “operating sector. I concentrated strictly on January 1938 when working with the extracts from acts of executions. The framework was developed and launched into production.

I began to receive letters through the site (people were gradually sending materials), however I continued to search for and research documents. Step by step I was creating a data base of the NKVD staff (who made the arrest, who carried out the rummage, who was a witness, who conducted the investigation, who signed the sanctions for arrest and for sentencing, etc.), forming a summary index -cards (including the graphological base of handwriting, personal autographs and analysis of typed text — after all, each typing machine has its own unique script). In addition, he gathered information about the storage of the documents (where, what and in which foundations /departments can the materials be founded (materials related to the cases of investigation, executions, revision, rehabilitation, etc.): the FSB archive, the MVD archive, Archive of the Military Prosecutor’s Office, archive of the West Siberian Military District and others).

One of the days I received one more letter from the reader of my site. It was a man whose relative was shot in Novosibirsk. I was happy with this data, too because in the period of interest to me, the city of Tomsk was administratively part of the Novosibirsk region and the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD was directly subordinate to the Novosibirsk Administration of the NKVD of the USSR; i.e. operational management and employees — were one link.

Алексей Иванович Салихов

Aleksey Ivanovich Salikhov

From these documents I identified the NKVD officers who killed this person (I already had information about many NKVD staff members in my data base), I passed the information about the officers of NKVD to the descendants of Aleksey Ivanovich Salikhov — that’s his name; he was shot on July 5, 1938, and arrested on the night of October 21, 1937 in the city of Tomsk. And it turned out (again from the documents) that before his arrest and at the moment of the arrest my great-grandfather Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin lived on the same street with this man, literally 2 houses away: in house number 16, and great-grandfather with his family lived in house number 10; which means they were neighbours. It was an incredible discovery that really inspired me! And I entered the address of this house (as a separate object) in an interactive map of my investigation. However, the surprises did not end there. With a more thorough analysis of his documents (I decided to approach this very carefully — what is called «neighborly»), a very strange entry was found on the extract from the act of shooting.

It said that «the act on the execution of the sentence is kept in the Special Archive of the 1st Special Department of the NKVD of the USSR». I have never seen this before. And most importantly — it was the information that I was not provided with, all attempts to acquire it were always blocked from me. Moreover, they hid the fact that such archives existed at all. «We have no information» — there was a standard answer.

SO, IS THIS SUPER-SECRET DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL SERVICES?

I believe that the answer is more likely – yes if taking into consideration the period I am interested in. Now it had to be found out where it was (2016). It was established that now it is in the city of Omsk, in the archive of the Office of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Omsk region. It got there as a reserve storage fund during the evacuation of archives from the Far East and the European part of the USSR, during the Second World War. Moreover, in the place of this backup storage there are also numerous documents on the «Special Meeting with the NKVD», and archival and investigative cases on the “dekulakization” (Expropriation of the assets from people who were more rich than the peasants) of the territories of the Far East, and various Moscow documents, and many other things, including the special archive of the USSR NKVD.

WERE THEY EVACUATED WITH A FEAR THAT THEY WILL BE CAPTURED BY THE JAPANESE OR GERMANS?

Of course everything was done within the framework of the «standard» evacuation of the most valuable things. The most valuable, you know!

I immediately requested the documents I searched for (including the volume number). The answer received from Omsk informed that the document requested by me (an act of execution) concerning my great-grandfather is not available in this archive, and in the volume I had mentioned, «there are acts on the execution by the decisions of the NKVD in the Chita Region» (although according to my forecasts there should have been acts of the Novosibirsk region). And this was a real breakthrough, because from this bureaucratic formulation I reliably established what I was always sure of: these documents still exist! But, I never doubted it. The only question was where exactly they were. And I thought that they were in Tomsk (at the place of the event and the place of permanent storage of the archives and investigation cases of the repressed).

Having finally taken this «warm trail», a real animal excitement awoke in me and I grabbed hold of this opportunity with a dead grip.

I decided to work out all possible variants (in order to collect all formal “refusals-rejections”), I sent a similar request to the Department of the Federal Security Service of Russia of the Novosibirsk regionAnd once again – Tomsk. There was no answer for a  few months. But I sent a request to Novosibirsk again. The received «technical answer» turned out to be absolutely stunning — they sent me the act of execution that I wanted!

AND THEY SENT EVERYTHING BY THEMSELVES

Act on carrying out the sentence by the Tomsk City Department of NKVD on January 21, 1938 in Tomsk Jail of the city of Tomsk in Kashtake (according to the order : 159/814 from January 13, 1938). Pages 1 from 1.

Not everything, but a specific act of carrying the sentence to execution. Why did this happen? Firstly, the request itself was formulated very accurately: the entire nomenclature of orders and dates was indicated. Moreover, the factor of knowledge of the archive of the special department and its place of storage was indicated, too, as well as correspondence with the FSB offices of Omsk and Tomsk was provided. The result achieved — the act was received. All this information, which I indicated in the request, was not for the average person, and not even for every historian. It also should not be forgotten that  at certain time all these numbers of orders and dates were blocked for me, in one way or another; But I still found them.

Another interesting fact is that on the act and the order there are no labels «secret» or «absolutely secretly.» Perhaps this sign is on the front page of the part with orders and acts. But, on the document itself it is not there. There are only two options: either it was so secret that it has never occurred to anyone to visualize it in this way, or the sign still stands, but on the front cover of the fund.

Those historians and specialists, with whom I have had time to talk, cannot believe that I managed it. Some were just shocked. They were shocked that I succeeded, that such documents existed and to get them was quite realistical. It is possible that this happened for the first time in the history of Russia, when a man was given a right to see such a document. But I am not 100% sure that I am right. Though it does not matter as you understand the idea is completely different.

I will say even more, according to some reports, a number of employees of the archives of the FSB Directorate were genuinely convinced that this act does not physically exist — it was allegedly destroyed in those times (scraped, like many other documents). But, I knew that this is not so and these documents still exist — for me it was clear, sometimes based on  basis of indirect evidence, and I was not just exploring it, I was absolutely convinced of it! And it turned out to be true, that I was right.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS ACT REVIEL?

The document is an order of the NKVD Office for the Novosibirsk Region of the USSR, where 36 people are sentenced and ordered to be shot on the basis of the decision of the «Special Meeting at the NKVD».  The document was sent personally to the head of the Tomsk City Department of the Interior of the NKVD Ovchinnikov Ivan Vasilievich for execution. After the execution — the murder of 36 people, this document along with the act of execution was to be sent back to Novosibirsk (this is the instruction in this very order) and, this order was fulfilled. Thus, we have a document on 3 pages, on the back of the third sheet of which the typewritten act of execution is endorsed by concrete executioners.

ОВЧИННИКОВ Иван Васильевич – начальник Томского ГО НКВД НСО СССР, капитан госбезопасности СССР.

ОВЧИННИКОВ Иван Васильевич – начальник Томского Горотдела НКВД.

Everything happened as I expected — there were the officials expected by me. I thought that there would most likely be a deputy or commandant of the prison, which is most likely the chief of the Town Council, Ovchinnikov, and someone from the staff — «inspectors» of the 8th branch. So it turned out to be as I expected. Still I assumed that there would be one of the investigators (Stepan Ivanovich’s case was conducted by several investigators), but no — in this part this was not confirmed.

A document is an absolute key that can open many doors right now, primarily symbolic ones.

Now we reliably know the commandant of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD was Denisov. For a long time I could not reliably clarify him. By the way, it was this Denisov I had already identified — his profile was in my database; Now it’s just 100% established that it was he, who was the commandant of the Tomsk operative sector of the NKVD diring the period I have been interested in.

The name of Noskova was also known to me from the publication in the local newspaper of 1937-1938. This Noskova has always been my «black horse» (at some point I even thought it was a joke of the city Department  to place a nonexistent employee’s name in a newspaper), because I could not understand why she did not pop out in the materials and databases where other employees could be found. Now it is clear: she was «just an executioner», an inspector (for «special assignments»).

WHY DID THEY WRITE ABOUT HER IN THE NEWSPAPER?

You know …

In the spring of 2016, sitting in the reading room of the scientific library of Tomsk University, and working on highly specialized issues of the French poststructuralist tradition (immersed in the world of such authors as J. Deleuze, F. Gattari, J. Bataille, J. René, J. Lacan, Foucault, B. Stiegler, Karl Jaspers, E. Fromm, G. Simmel, Dilthey, Ernst Cassirer, Charles Peirce, Frege, Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Maurice, Bakhtin, Yu . Kristeva, Solomonik A., R. Jacobson, K. Levi-Strauss, Lotman, Richard Rorty, F. Brentano, Husserl, Heidegger, Shpet, Merleau-Ponty, Bergson , Friedrich Nietzsche, L. Witgenstein … and thinking exclusively about them).

I suddenly, quite unexpectedly, got up and went to the stand with periodicals.

Выпуск газеты "Красное Занямя", №211 от 13 ноября 1937 года, суббота. Организаторы убийства Степана Ивановича Карагодина: Сталин, Молотов, Ворошилов, Ежов.

An issue of the newspaper “Krasnoe Znamya” (Red Flag) number 211, dated Saturda, November 13, 1937. Stalin, Molotov, Voroshilov, Yezhov – the organizers of the murder of Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin.

I opened the binded issues of the Tomsk newspaper «Red Flag» for 1937-1938 and began to look for a photograph of the prosecutor of the city of Tomsk, Nikolai Pilyushenko. There was such a mass murderer, an absolute maniac (he made his subordinates read more fiction of the period of “Great terror” so that they could practice and perfect their eloquence in  prosecuting verdicts). Though he was arrested in  1939 being  accused of conspiracy with a «right-Trotskyist counterrevolutioners,» but in fact the «proceedings» were simply dismissed (he got lucky). Moreover, on the basis of this particular arrest he was recognized a victim of political repression and entered the Memory Book of the Tomsk Region as aggrieved.

I, having known all this and clinging to an array of pages that were screaming from every page about the attack of all sorts of fascists (including «fascist pirates»- a direct quote)  » on our socialist homeland» , and at the same time rejoicing together with the reader for solving of different conspiracies and crimes against Soviet People under “Wise guidance of NKVD ” (including prominent Bolsheviks as well as watchmen in rural clubs, who were trying to do everything to «harm» and disrupt coming in late 1937 — early 1938 elections), I still continued to search. I was, of-course very worried about «our people in Spain» and whether everything was good with «Chinese comrades»? All this reading is breathtaking — I recommend it to everyone.

Выпуск томской газеты "Красное Знамя" (№236 (5321), от 20 декабря 1937 года) с тематическим заголовком: "Сегодня весь советский народ отмечает славное двадцатилетие ВЧК-ОГПУ-НКВД".

An issue of the Tomsk newspaper “Red Flag” (number 236 (5321) dated December 20, 1937 under a thematical headline “All Soviet people are commemorating  twentieth anniversary of All Russian Committee of Emergency Issues – United Political Department of the Government – NKVD”

«Having worked» through the whole year of 1937, and this is 242 issues, I found interesting information. I could not find a photograph of the Plyushenko, but I found several photographs of the NKVD regional employees who were awarded with the highest state honors; the articless did not mention what they were awarded for, but I knew for sure — for mass killings (there are documents). It was the culmination of their success, they looked kind hearted in photos and immediately one wanted to believe them and be proud of them. And one of the photos there was this Noskova, in the note under her photo there were following words — «one of the active employees of the Tomsk city department of the NKVD.»  I just mechanically put her name into my data base and started to investigate her profile.

Палач Томского горотдела НКВД – НОСКОВА Екатерина Михайловна.

Executioner of the Tomsk City Department of NKVD – Noskova Yekaterina Mihaylovna.

And so, on January 21, 1938, 64 people were killed (shot) in the city of Tomsk, thanks to all these «article» heroes.  And this was a result of one day work. The same murders took place before and after, for months. It was a conveyor, a nonstop machine of cold – blooded murders, a mechanism, a routine.

I believe that these three hangmen are the main group. Although, in my data base, there are more butchers, but these three were authentically identified by me.

DO YOU WANT TO FIND ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE, INCLUDING DRIVERS OF «BLACK VORONKI», AND TYPISTS, WHO THE DOCUMENTS?

I do not want to, but I did it.

And it’s not just the names and positions, but all the necessary (and sufficient) amount of personal data: name, year of birth, track record, birth place, number of orders for awarding, awarding titles, death certificates and photographs.

About the drivers and typists, I will say so.

I have developed the entire list of garage drivers of the Tomsk City Department of NKVD (including the dispatcher of «ZK»), and for a couple typists. But, this is still rather an optional goal. The typist we will not «attract» as an accomplice (although if you work out the type of typing machine, compare the schedule of shifts, etc. — it is possible). The driver, as a partner in crime can be 100% «attracted» to the case.  Now, for this purpose, it would be enough to have an order to use the car (for specific dates) which, I believe is absolutely possible.

But, it’s not about  them. It is about the shooting team I’ve been hunting for.  And I got them! All of them.

Last weekend I spent recoding the documents I received and refining the profiles of the killers; and suddenly I realized that my investigation was complete.

It’s a very strange feeling, you know. Imagine that you have developed the operation of the day «D» for landing in Normandy (with all the logistics and support), and have already begun your route movement, when you are informed that Hitler went to the bathroom, where he accidentally slipped and hit his head against the sink and  died.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU KNOW ABOUT EXECUTIONERS, EXCEPT THEIR LAST NAMES?

In general – everything. I want to get their additional photos. I already have a  photo of Noskova, number of Denisov’s party ticket, accordingly, I will find a photo. The third one is a new one, Zyryanov is an assistant to the chief of the prison. I had information that Komsomol members also participated in the massacres, it was a separate line that I developed. And he was a member of the Komsomol since 1930. It was he who had to work «on the Komsomol line», he, who helped. There was an order – pay whatever you want (any money), but only so that they do the work.

I found a salary statements for the period of 1936-1938, I wanted to understand if there was an increase in payments during this period (on specific dates). I decided to make a table, to reveal by indirect signs, by some associative connections, and … directly –  boom, and they sent you everything. I think they did not even understand what they did.

What does it mean — they sent everything?

Only scribbles of their autographs and names (without initials), of course, no more information was provided.

Автографы палачей Томского Горотдела НКВД

Автографы палачей Томского Горотдела НКВД

Names, patronymics, track record, year of birth, photo, etc. – all this was already known to me. This requested information of course, they would not have given me (this cannot be even discussed). In June of this year, I told you a little about it.

YOU WRITE THAT YOU HAVE DETECTED AN AGENT-PROVOCATEUR. WHO IS THIS PERSON?

Сотрудники НКВД СССР по Западно-Сибирскому краю. Подробнее здесь.

Сотрудники НКВД СССР по Западно-Сибирскому краю. Подробнее здесь.

This is the main provoker of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD — agent-provocateur — Pushkin Ivan Fyodorovich, born in 1911. Not just a simple provoker (“hen”), but so fierce that allowed himself to teach investigators (officers of the city department) how they should exactly work with the arrested. In the 1950s and later, when former employees testified at political commissions (and in the military prosecutor’s office), they pointed on him as the main one. Now we know the names of the investigators for whom he had knocked the testimonies out of the arrested for. «Knocked out» here is used in both practical and symbolic meanings.

In 1958 the Military Prosecutor’s Office refused to rehabilitate him with the verdict «a person engaged in falsification of criminal cases» (after all, formally, he was under investigation during his «work» at the Tomsk NKVD Department); but already in 1990, with the following words «a person who was not a staff member of NKVD», he was given the title «rehabilitated».

But, as they say, if one door closes, then probably other door opens. Indeed, it was this legal incident that allowed me to request access to his case as a «victim of political repression» (rehabilitated person) — let’s see what kind of victim he is. They did not have any right to reject me. The case is in permanent custody at the FSB Directorate of Tomsk Oblast (Region). The same thing I did about Prosecutor Pilyushenko, for the same reasons.

I call these legal loopholes «system bugs». Have you watched the movie «The Matrix»? The movie is mainly built on the concept of the French social theorist Jean Baudriyard (one of my favorite academic authors).

DID THIS PROVOKER AGENT BEAT OUT CONFESSIONS FROM YOUR GREAT GRAND FATHER, TOO?

We cannot state this for sure.

But, the practice of torture in the Tomsk City Committee of the NKVD existed and it was actively used; they were called «world» — measures of physical impact. I have official documents of the state authorities that prove this information.

And you need to understand that it was physical violence that could be used to one person under investigation, for example, to hit the head with thick books, to clench the fingers in the doors, to stand for hours, various stretches, trivial beat, etc. (I listed the specific methods of torture practiced in the Tomsk NKVD Department).

To other defendants, a more sophisticated method could be applied: it was enough just to show the first sheet of their questionnaire (from the case that just started), where they answered all questions about their family members (at the first interrogation), and they were threatened with repressions towards the family … — this was more than enough for people to sign any documents; If only their family, wife, children were not touched. It’s simple.

Perhaps, something similar happened to Stepan Ivanovich, because after his arrest his sons who were in service in Toms were suddenly promoted at work.  Kind of a «contract», you know? A deal. But, I do not know for sure. On the interrogation reports which I saw personally, his signature was not steady (not natural). And on some sheets, the impression is that at first blank sheets were signed, and on top of them the interrogation materials (reprinted later by the typist) were already inserted.

But, this is a completely separate and very big topic. I also knew about signature on clean sheets — as a usual practice in the Tomsk NKVD city center.

AFTER OUR JUNE INTERVIEW AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS ABOUT YOUR INVESTIGATION, YOU HAVE RECEIVED A LOT OF LETTERS — AND JUST FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WERE CURIOUS AND FROM THOSE WHO WANTD TO FIND THE INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR REPRESSED RELATIVES. WHAT DO THEY WRITE, IN GENERAL: «FELLOW, YOU DID A GOOD JOB, BUT YOU WON’T ACHIEVE ANYTHING» OR “WE WILL BE DOING THE SAME»?

I heard from the very first day, that I will not achieve anything. And I hear it till now. At some point my closest friends were convinced that I would not succeed, that there will be no further achievements.  I just did not pay attention to it, because the solution of impossible tasks is actually the whole project KARAGODIN.ORG.

Степан Иванович Карагодин со своими детьми – Дальний Восток.

Степан Иванович Карагодин со своими детьми.

Any of its points is an impossible task, and as you can see, each of it is solved. And the one that has not been solved yet will be solved. Undoubtedly there is something impossible, but these zones are determined by me and realizing them (like the Stalker by Strugatskiy Brothers), I concentrate on the possible.

Yes — many wrote that I did a great job. It certainly was nice to hear. But, each of these letters was always accompanied by a personal mini-story, each letter revealed a family tragedy and mutilated fates. I think people wanted revenge. And seeing that at least someone is succeeding — they wished me strength. Even offered money (just for the sake of support), I certainly refused.

I was also often asked about how to make a request and where to send it, how to get documents. There are many technical issues. This greatly distracted me (and distracts till now). I’m not a public organization to «work with citizens’ appeals,» I’m just one man. I am working on specific, private business. But, I still tried to answer everyone. To the best of my ability of course… Advising them how to do it better; But it was very difficult, very hard as every story was a hell; you need to let it go through you; at the same time, not leaving the hell of the Russian bureaucracy. You must understand this. This is some sort of endless stream … It’s very hard; But you can’t leave a letter without an answer, because each letter is a cry from the heart of a person; Perhaps the last desperate chance to learn something. I sincerely tell you — I really want to remove this humanitarian burden from myself. I’m not a «Memorial» society, but they are writing to me for some reason. They, I think, also receive letters … In general, everyone writes to everyone and in the end we have what we have.

WERE THE  RELATIVES OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO WERE SHOT  WITH STEPAN IVANOVICH, EVER BEEN FOUND?

Справка о смерти Степана Иванович Карагодина

Справка о смерти Степана Иванович Карагодина

No. I could not find these relatives. Honestly, I did not b have such a task. I think they are simply dead. Look, there are 8 people on the case of shooting, 7 were shot. The death certificates in the Tomsk Civil Registry Office are falsified for all of them – there are false death dates and false causes of death. NKVD, and later the KGB of the USSR, concealed the traces of its crimes — massacres — by falsifying documents in registry offices. How exactly this happened (including secret internal orders) can also be read on my website. However, over time (this is the 50th and 80th years), the certificates for three of the seven were corrected: the real date of death is «January 21, 1938», the real cause of death is «execution». This means only one thing: at the time of the correction, the relatives of the dead were alive; this principle of making corrections can also be read in the documents on the investigation website.

Our investigation is completed – this is the main thing. We learned what our family wanted to know for many generations — the names of all the killers. And we did it. Everyone did their part. Mine started in 2012 and ended on November 12, 2016. The very same investigation was conducted from December 1, 1937, the nights of Stepan Ivanovich’s arrest  by the members of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD. Now we know the entire chain of murderers (from the organizers in Moscow to the specific executioners in Tomsk, and not just the names, but detailed biographies, including home addresses, and sometimes photographs of personal home archives). Serious work was conducted. Now we can talk about this. It is done.

When in 1928 Stepan Ivanovich was arrested for the second time (having been imprisoned in Blagoveshchensk, and later raskulachili (expropriated everything) and deported to Narymsky Territory), his wife was a Cossack, a native of Maikop, being completely illiterate (she could neither write nor read) — Anna Dmitrievna, began a campaign of public pressure, thus beginning of a good tradition. In 2013, I came to the Far East in the village of Volkovo, found the descendants of those who then in 1928 stood up for Stepan Ivanovich (participated in the campaign) and thanked them; I left a letter of thanks in the museum of the village that is in the magnificent museum of the rural school.

I am, unlikely my great-grandmother, not illiterate. Therefore, I can conduct similar campaigns at the level that my university education allows me. At the same time, the spirit of the Kuban Cossacks, in its line, seems to have gone nowhere from me.

In the same year of 1928, the Bolshevik newspaper Amurskaya Pravda (which, by the way still exists so far) issued a devastating article concerning the administration of the village of Volkovo in the Blagoveshchensk district of the Amur Region, which was headed by Stepan Ivanovich at that time, as chairman of the village council. This article was eventually incorporated by the Bolshevik investigation into the materials of the 1928 case and served as «another proof» of his guilt-the result of the raskulachivaniya and deportation to Siberia for 3 years. Upon her departure, he was in Tomsk.

Thus, in addition to the campaign of public pressure, the media component was also introduced into the case; and these two components became permanent.

Now, using the tradition of multi-level campaigns of social and political pressure, laid down in 1928 by my great-grandmother (Stepan Ivanovich’s wife — Anna Dmitrievna), and using the media, but already as a mechanism turned in our favor, I achieved what I achieved — the murder of my great-grandfather was revealed! I think Anna Dmitriyevna would be pleased with me. I give her this tribute to her memory.

And what has been done- is the main thing; this is more than enough.

However, that’s not all.

The second part of the investigation is the prosecution of all people guilty of the murder of Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin. Absolutely the whole chain: from the organizers of this particular murder — the members of the Politburo in Moscow (led by citizen Dzhugashvili Joseph Vissarionovich, born in 1878, better known under the pseudonyms «Koba», «Stalin»), to concrete executioners in Tomsk (citizens: Zyryanov Nikolai Ivanovich, born in 1912, Denisov Sergei Timofeevich, born in 1892 and Noskovoy Catherine Mikhailovna, born in 1903). The chain of killers is quite long — more than 20 people: organizers, managers, executors, accomplices — all. The charge is factual: a group of people committed group murder.

Scenarios of this legal procedure (on bringing to responsibility) have already been developed.

MASS  MURDER — IS THIS ABOUT ALL 64 PEOPLE?

No. Only seven. Though, on that fatal day — on January 21, 1938, at least 64 people were killed by members of the Tomsk City Committee of the NKVD (and people associated with them). By the way, this information was also revealed by me separately. Nevertheless, even though in our key document – an act of execution – we see the names of 36 out of those 64 people, we have only the actual material of the evidence for 7 of them. The key is Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin. He himself and everyone who were executed together with him as per «Harbin operation» by the decision of the «Special Meeting at the NKVD»: namely, Baturin Frol Danilovch, Bocharnikov Iosif Mikhailovich, Malakishcher Matvey Leontievich, Simo Elena Dmitrievna, Starovoit Ulyana Andreevna and Shabalin Vaniyamin Yakovlevich.

FROM STALIN TO TOMSK EXECUTIONERS?

Yes exactly. All of them. Including the driver of the «black voronok» – he is an accomplice.

BUT YOU WILL BE REFUSED IN EXCITING THE CASE

Have you tried?

Or, do you think that by making such a statement (in general about the possibility of such an act ), I am not familiar with the regulatory framework of the Russian Federation as of November 2016?

I repeat, twice:

First. Main thing of our investigation is done: the crime is solved which is the most and the key important thing.

The second. Scenario on legal procedure (bringing perpetrators to criminal liability) is developed. And not to take advantage of this opportunity would really be a crime. Who still managed to go so far? With such an invoice and evidence data base? Are there such examples? I personally do not know. Let it be (and if suddenly it turns out to be unsuccessful), then at least it will go down in history as an attempt. A laid down tradition is a powerful thing!

Справка о реабилитации Степана Ивановича Карагодина, 1955 год.

One man kills the other, and then says: you know, I killed him, but here’s the certificate that I rehabilitated him — now everything is in order. No, it’s not okay. And this is absolutely obvious.

No one has ever filed such a claim in the history of Russia, no one had an idea to reach the end (to the extent of its implementation, which has already happened to me).

Formally, there are several types of restrictions: the limitation period for this particular type of crime. But, this restriction is easily removed in the State Duma of the Russian Federation. There are other formal signs of «failure», but as I already said — we have not developed a scenario, but scenarios.

After all, in fact, the case against these killers has already begun. Prior to that, we conducted the investigation inversively — revealing the perpetrators of the murder in the case of the «guilt» of the dead. Now we are turning the wrong side to the right side — into the normal position of the fabric of reality. Everything should and will be called by its own names: killers — murderers, hangmen — executioners, accomplices — accomplices, and victims — victims. And not in an abstract theoretical and hypothetical sense, but in a real sense.

It’s hard to say what will all end with, but at least it is real.

«It can give rise to a public discussion. The discussion that did not take place in our country neither in the 1950  nor in the 1980s. «

– as he wrote in his journalistic article «Name the names of the executioners. As in Russia the memory of the past revives.» Russian historian, Doctor of Historical Sciences Ivan Kurilla, understanding the draft of my investigation.

From myself, I will add the following.

In 1857, the Emperor of the Russian Empire Alexander II expelled Mikhail Bakunin, a theorist of Russian anarchism, to the city of Tomsk, to the Siberian exile to an eternal settlement. From which he successfully flees in 1861, through the territory of Japan, eventually moving to the city of London, where he settles in the magazine «Bell» to Alexander Herzen, who, as we all remember, «woke the Russian revolutionaries.»

My great-grandfather Stepan Ivanovich Karagodin, who lived in Tomsk after serving his Siberian exile in the early 1930s, lives not only on Bakunin Street (named after Mikhail), but also in his house, though in the basement (entrance to the right, Yard). The modern address is Tomsk, Bakunin street, house 14. And he does not just live in this house, but is also arrested by the employees of the Tomsk City Department of the NKVD at this address, and charged with «being a resident of the Japanese military intelligence».

Of course, there is no direct connection, but to deny a certain circumstances is rather difficult. In any case, symbolically — this can be appraised as a sign. The sign of inclusion in the fabric of history. In its historical cycle. Let it be from the main entrance, but from the basement, but still the entrance.

So that’s it. I do not exclude the fact that we will close this cycle with our lawsuit.

In general, I am not a very religious person, rather an agnostic (digging in the social structure at the «program level», looking with enthusiasm for the success of the «CERN» project — the highest point of development of human theoretical thought). But, at the same time, I am certainly familiar with the Christian theological tradition (and Russian religious philosophy); my favorite saints are Thomas Aquinas and Aurelius Augustine — the two greatest theologians.

And now pondering over all that I have done, and especially over a series of fantastic coincidences (which was much more than I have just described to you), I sometimes come to such a strange and in many ways even completely frightening me mystical thought (which I then always drive away from myself ) — that, all these coincidences are not accidental.

That all these people shot in Tomsk on Kashtak, and now lying on the bottom of this ravine, under a pile of reinforced concrete fittings, construction and industrial debris (pressing them with force into several storied houses) helping me. I do not know how, but sometimes I just physically feel this strange, incomparable force, and with such support to us who lives now (and alive) it is possible to do absolutely everything!

And even if I fail to formalize everything legally — to commit an act of bringing to justice the murderers of my great-grandfather, then (with all my sincere respect for the Russian judicial corps), what difference does it make to me what a man in robes will say  when anyway I know the names of the murderers.

I believe that the discussion that took place neither in the 1950s nor in the 1980s has now begun.

I thank all those whom I should thank.
